Cutting Edge was established in April 2011 by Pam Stead with the support of Monica Dennis and Hilary Carney.
And Spike Dennis designed the logo and helped to establish the blog.
Cutting Edge is a textile group that meets the 2nd Tuesday of every month between 10.00am and 3.00pm in Ystradowen Village Hall, Vale of Glamorgan. We sew, quilt, embroider, crochet – in fact – anything that takes your fancy! For more information, or to join Cutting Edge contact Monica Dennis email: cuttingedgetextiles@gmail.com
We also have an off-shoot group – Dyeing to Paint – that meets the 1st Thursday of every month in Ystradowen Village Hall, Vale of Glamorgan. It is for anyone interested in experimenting with fabric paints/crayons. print blocks/stencils etc. For more information email cuttingedgetextiles@gmail.com
Sadly, Pam died suddenly in September 2014 leaving members bereft. She will be greatly missed for her generosity and kindness. A tribute to Pam can be found here.
Hilary stood down from running the group in September 2016. Members thanked her for the wonderful contribution that she had made over the past 5 years.
Monica Dennis and Liz Price currently run the group with the generous support of other members
The group has had a number of major projects in recent years:
– The WW1 quilt challenge. Click here to read about it
– Celebrating the Year of the Sea Exhibition (2018) held in Tapestri Cafe, Swansea as part of the Swansea Festival of Stitch. The work was shown again in September 2019 at the Old Hall as part of the Vale Makers
Festival
In 2023 the group’s work was exhibited at the Queen Street Gallery Neath. Click here for more information
Also in 2023 the group made a quilt to celebrate International Women’s Day. Click here to read more about it. And a celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Laura Ashley the group made a Dragon Quilt. Click here to read about it
I would just like to thank you all for making me so welcome, walking into a room and not knowing a sole is quite daunting but you all made me feel at home straight away. I thought all your work was amazing and it was great to see what you all working on, I shall look forward to seeing you all again in Sept. thanks again jan
Dear Monica and Liz
I would love to join your group and would welcome information about whether this is possible.
I have recently cut down my working hours so I am now ‘semi’ retired after a wonderful career in academia.
I have completed the certificate in Technical Hand Embroidery and I’m now working on the Diploma. I’ve been seeing and knitting since I was 6 and love connecting with others with a similar passion.
I heard about your group at a Goldwork session run by Salinder at the YstradOwen centre when I sat next to Amanda.
I understand that you may not have a place available at the moment but hope there’ll be a way that I can be in touch.
All the best

Hello Patricia. Sincere apologies for not responding sooner – I have only just seen your comment on the blog – I was away in February so it slipped under the radar! You are more than welcome to visit us – 2nd Tuesday of the month 10am – 3pm at Ystradown Village hall ( directions can be downloaded from the blog). Just drop in for a coffee initially if you would like or you are welcome to stay for the day – whatever suits. Visitors pay £5. We are a very informal and friendly group and would love to meet you!
